The Homelands of H6a1a8?

These blog posts do not claim to be factual beyond the available written records. Based on the fragments I can glean from Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA variants—supplemented by evidence from ancient DNA and archaeology—I weave a narrative. To a scientist, this leap of faith might seem heretical. But I am no scientist; I am a Time Traveller, and I claim the storyteller’s right to narrative.

I ask your forgiveness as I spin these stories through a web of ancient cultures. I cannot prove that a specific ancestor belonged to any particular archaeological horizon; I can only suggest what might have been. It is a matter of plausibility, not certainty.

In that spirit, I suggest that the map above—spanning the Alps, the Carpathians, and their surrounding regions—might just be the cradle where H6a1a mutated to become H6a1a8. It is plausible that this was the homeland of my later F8693412 private variant, shared today by an Austrian tester and several English H6a1a8 descendants.

Now, I shall zoom into the Vienna and Danube Basin, focusing on that narrow gap where the river passes near modern-day Bratislava: The Devín Gate.

In 800 BCE, the Danube here was a labyrinth of shifting gravel banks and braided waterways, choked with deadwood. Dense, riparian wild forests of willow and poplar lined the alluvial plains. Bison, aurochs, wolves, brown bears and red deer still frequented the shallows.

Human presence and their mixed agriculture were defined by the archaeological culture known as Urnfield, which was then transitioning into the Hallstatt culture; the local inhabitants likely left traces of both. To the east of the Devín Gate lay the downstream expanse of the Little Hungarian Plain—the Danubian Flat—where vast, wild wetlands dominated the landscape. 

The success of local cultures did not lie entirely with their agriculture. It also lay in their position within Europe—a position that was particularly valuable now, as the first iron smiths arrived to bring the Late Bronze Age to a close. Trade routes brought precious amber down from the Baltic through the Morava River valley; Europe was not some neat division of peoples, isolated from one another. Meanwhile, salt moved north from the Hallstatt salt mines in the Alps. Locals would control these movements and barter for luxuries: textiles, bronze, tin, and wine from the south.

It was this movement of people along established trade networks that could have been responsible for carrying the mitochondrial DNA haplogroup H6a1a8 (including but not only the F8693412 private variant cluster) towards its modern distribution in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria, Hungary, Finland, and Sweden (note* ftDNA maps). Central to that distribution is my proposed homeland. Trade routes across different ages may have helped to carry H6a1a8 through various successive cultures; I perceive mtDNA haplogroup H6a1a8 to be intrinsically connected to the European Iron Age.

This movement of peoples across the Continent and even into the British & Irish Isles, offers one explanation of the distribution of a haplogroup, that Family Tree DNA currently dates to a TMRCA (Time of Most Recent Common Ancestor) of 761 BCE - representing a range of between 1230 BCE and 328 BCE.

Although the people who lived here at this time were to be increasingly identified as belonging to Hallstatt Culture, their Urnfield practices continued.  Almost all of their dead were cremated, cheating modern geneticists of their ancient DNA. The ashes of their loved ones were then placed in distinctive urns, which would be buried in vast urn fields, devoid of mounds.

Their settlements were often small, open villages located on fertile river terraces. Within timber-framed longhouses and pit-houses, walled with wattle and daub, they lived under roofs of thatched reed harvested from the wetlands. There is archaeological evidence that the walls of the houses may have been decorated with red or geometric patterns (triangles or spirals).

However, people were just beginning to move back up onto the Devín and Braunsberg heights for protection as social tensions rose. Society was becoming "heroic" in the Homeric sense; power was held by local "big men" who proved their worth through feasting and gift-giving. Into this mix, the new technology of iron was arriving.

Interestingly, ancient DNA studies from the broader Iron Age suggest that many of these communities practiced matrilocality or maintained strong maternal clan structures. The women here may have been the permanent heart of the community, while men moved between tribes to forge alliances.

There were also larger hillforts, such as those crowning the heights of the Devín Gate. These forts featured box ramparts that would have appeared as massive white or grey stone walls from a distance. Here, the chieftains and elites resided.

These people loved colour. They used natural dyes such as woad (blue), madder (red), and weld (yellow), and plaid-like patterns (checked weaving) were already in use. Jewellery was bold—heavy bronze neck-rings (torcs) and "spectacle" fibulae (large brooch-pins made of coiled wire).

Perhaps, my one hundred-times great-grandmother was here? Maybe that is her weaving above? My mtDNA H6a1a8 ancestor.

The map above highlights the area discussed in this post: Altmark, situated around the River Elbe on the North German Plain. In this post, I am exploring the journey of my matrilineage, defined by the mitochondrial DNA haplogroup H6a1a8 (specifically the private variant cluster F8693412).

This lineage could, of course, have arrived in East Anglia via several routes; I am presenting only two. In Option B, the lineage arrives via a Hallstatt bride reaching South East Britain during the Earlier Iron Age. Here, in Option A, I follow an Anglo-Saxon route. In this scenario, the lineage moved northwards from an Eastern Alpine origin and, by 500 BCE, existed within the early Jastorf culture along the River Elbe.

The Jastorf archaeological culture is often seen as connected to the emergence of later, Germanic peoples.

Did my ninety-times great-grandmother live among these people?

The Environment The landscape is a mosaic of sandy pine barrens, fertile loess soils ideal for agriculture, and the wide, unpredictable floodplains of the River Elbe. This low-lying, sandy plain is dissected by numerous tributaries, making settlement a matter of strategy. Communities cling to the ‘islands’ of higher, drier ground (Geest) to escape the seasonal flooding of the marshlands.

Climate The ‘Subatlantic’ climatic phase has taken hold; consequently, it is cooler and wetter than in previous centuries. This persistent dampness dictates every facet of life, from the construction of houses to the specific crops sown. For the Jastorf farmers, floods are a frequent and formidable seasonal hazard.

Jastorf and the Three-Aisled Longhouse

​The social unit is centered on the Three-Aisled Longhouse. These are impressive timber-frame structures with wattle-and-daub walls and thatched roofs. They are a shared space: Humans and livestock live under one roof. The cattle occupy one end, their body heat helping to warm the central living area where the hearth fire never truly goes out.

Subsistence: These are skilled farmers. They grow emmer wheat, barley, and millet, but there is an increasing reliance on flax (for linen) and gold-of-pleasure (for oil).

​Hardiness: Life is a constant negotiation with the soil. They supplement their diet with intensive foraging for acorns, hazelnuts, and wild berries.

This is a largely egalitarian, tribal society, but "big men" or local chieftains are again beginning to emerge. 

​The Cult of the Dead: Cremation is the standard. The ashes are placed in ceramic urns and are also buried in vast "urnfields." In the Altmark, these cemeteries are often reused for generations, creating a deep sense of ancestral continuity.

The Sacred Bog: The surrounding wetlands are seen as portals to the divine. It is common to deposit "votive offerings"—fine pottery, weapons, or even sacrificed animals—into the peat as gifts to deities that govern the rain and the harvest.

The Nienburg Group The Nienburg Group are seen as significant pioneers of the later Germanic cultures—the "bridge-builders" of European culture. In the centuries to follow, they will be in contact and trading with Belgic groups expanding from the Danube in the south to the western boundaries of the Nienburg Group. If my ninety-times great-grandmother is not already here in 500 BCE, perhaps it is then that her lineage will arrive?

Iron The Bronze Age was now fading. Europe was no longer dependent on the importation of bronze, copper, and tin, as iron had become commonplace. Our Jastorf ancestors were very likely to have harvested bog iron—mineral deposits that settled during repeated floods. They could collect these small pellets of raw iron and forge them into tools far sharper than those made of bronze.

Although it required the arduous labour of forging and hammering, the end product was inexpensive, locally sourced, and durable. Crucially, it could be repaired. Human relationships and their respective cultures shifted in response to these new implements. While bronze had been a symbol of elite status, iron became the practical, everyday tool of the Northern European farmers.

Meet a great-grandmother from 250 generations ago. She carries the mtDNA haplogroup H6, or perhaps H6a, in trillions of her cells. She is a descendant of the 'Basal Helena' we met in the Levant 25,000 BCE. But this grandmother lives on the banks of the Volga, in what is now southern Russia, and the date is 4,500 BCE.

She is no longer a nomad of the caves. Here she belongs to a world of copper, cattle, and sheep—the first great social hierarchies of the steppe. The ancient spark from the Levant has adapted to the cold winds of the north.

Our 250-times great-grandmother is not a wife of the Fertile Crescent Neolithic, nor have her people abandoned their Eastern Hunter-Gatherer roots. Instead, they have adapted to a way of life unique to the steppe. The herds they once hunted, they now master. They take from the Fertile Crescent what they need—sheep and cattle—but they do not toil the soil. They are women of the great Eurasian Steppe. They are becoming the great pastoralists; the herders of the endless grasslands

This ancestor belongs to an archaeological layer which Russian researchers have named the Khvalynsk culture. It is a period defined by a pivotal shift: the move away from hunting, fishing, and foraging towards the pastoral herding of cattle, sheep, and goats.

These herds introduced the concepts of private property and surplus value to their economy—a newfound wealth that seems to have stratified their society. While some of their graves were laden with status objects, such as polished stone maces and copper bracelets, rings and pendants, others remained starkly bare.

The Great Eurasian Steppe serves as the continent's primary thoroughfare. Across these vast grasslands, new cultures, languages, and peoples—alongside their livestock and technologies—surged east and west, linking Europe, the Caucasus, and Central and East Asia. The people of the Khvalynsk culture were a product of this flux, carrying the genetic heritage of several previously isolated populations. These included hunter-gatherer groups local to the East Europe and the Eurasian Steppe, from the Caucasus, and from as far away as Siberia. Our 250th great-grandmother’s matrilineal lineage once resided on the Iranian Plateau before embarking on an arduous trek far to the north. Her arrival on the Volga helped forge a new way of life, blending southern traditions with the rugged spirit of the northern plains.

The Zarzian Return: 18,000 BCE I visualize the Zarzian hunter-gatherers of the Zagros and ask: is this my great-grandfather?

The unbearably harsh conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) once drove the Baradostian Ice Age hunters out of these mountains and into lower-altitude refuges. However, after 20,000 years ago, the climate began to stabilize, permitting a slow return to the Zagros valleys. Unlike many other groups of the era, my paternal ancestors do not appear to have traveled far; they remained rooted in the Zagros or South Caucasus region for an immense span of time. I would conjecture that they return to the same valleys:

The Zarzian Way: A Prelude to Farming The Zarzian culture was the eastern equivalent of the Epipalaeolithic Natufians in the western Fertile Crescent. While their Baradostian predecessors had sustained themselves primarily by hunting caprines—wild goats and sheep—life after the Last Glacial Maximum shifted toward a broader strategy.

Post-glacial humans enjoyed a far greater diversity of food. Their diet expanded beyond the ibex and mouflon to include onagers, gazelles, crustaceans, fish, birds, and—as visualized above—tortoises. They also gathered a wide array of wild plants, including legumes, nuts, and grass seeds. Evidence of grinding stones suggests they were processing these into porridges or primitive flatbreads.

This period likely represented a critical, early stage in the journey toward agriculture. Accidental selection processes were already in motion. By gathering seeds from plants with firmer rachises (the stem holding the grain), they were unconsciously initiating the shift toward domestication. A similar, unintended process was occurring with their prey. By managing their herds—selecting specific animals to hunt while preserving others—they began the long transition toward animal husbandry. They weren't intentionally trying to "invent" farming; rather, it was nature at work, forging new, symbiotic relationships between humans and the species around them.

Their tools evolved alongside their diet. While the Baradostians excelled at manufacturing burins and regular blades, the Zarzians pushed flint technology further, creating even smaller, geometric microliths designed for complex, composite tools.

Introduction This is the tale of a long journey from the last Ice Age to the present day—a history of my paternal lineage as determined by Y-DNA research, archaeology, linguistics, and, to be honest, a fair amount of conjecture. While this is the story of just one ancestral line of an East Anglian, it represents a single thread in a vast tapestry. There are thousands more ancestors in my past, but their specific stories are lost in the quagmire of genetic recombination. Our ancestry is far less localized than we conventionally think; you likely have a similarly epic story hidden in your own cells. I was simply lucky enough that this one followed a steady genetic marker down through the millennia.

The Subject Matter I am an English "chappie" from an East Anglian family. However, a DNA test revealed a far more exotic signature:

For the sake of brevity, let’s call it L-FGC51036.

If I were to trace my father's line - back through grandfathers and great-grandfathers, all the way to the depths of the Last Glacial Maximum - who would that ancestor be? How did he survive the biting cold of the Ice Age, and where on this earth was he standing?

The Ice Age Pioneers: 25,000 Years Ago This is where I believe my direct paternal ancestor lived 25,000 years ago. The climate was seasonally harsh as the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) approached—a period when life in the Zagros would eventually become intolerable. For now, however, my Ice Age ancestor and his band survived by hunting large game, particularly the Bezoar Ibex (wild goat) and the Mouflon (wild sheep). This was the dawn of a profound relationship; our later ancestors would slowly forge a bond with the local ibex, eventually leading to its domestication. By exploiting the varied habitats across different altitudes of the Zagros valleys, they practiced what anthropologists call vertical hunting.

These were not the first humans to inhabit the region. Anatomically modern humans arrived circa 40,000 years ago, but Neanderthals had made these valleys their home long before. While my 23andMe results suggest I have more Neanderthal DNA than 98% of their customers, I take that specific metric with a grain of salt. Regardless of that ancient admixture, these modern humans in the Zagros—likely my direct ancestors—are known to archaeologists as the Baradostian Culture.

The Baradostians are often linked to the Aurignacian Culture of Europe, the famous pioneers who trekked across the European continent between 40,000 and 33,000 years ago. While the European Aurignacians left behind splendid cave paintings and sculptures—often featuring lions—the Baradostians of Southwest Asia left a more subtle mark. Some researchers even suggest that the Aurignacians were actually Baradostians who had migrated into Europe.

While we find fewer examples of Ice Age artwork in the Zagros, this may simply be due to sampling bias; modern politics and conflict often hinder archaeological investigation in the region. Instead, we look to their flint assemblages. The Baradostians were adept at knapping small bladelets and crafting burins—sharp, chisel-edged tools used for piercing hides. They utilized massive limestone caves and rock shelters, such as Shanidar and Yafteh, as seasonal basecamps. Inside, archaeologists have found evidence of large, central hearths where families would gather to cook, repair tools, and perhaps pass down the oral traditions that kept their culture alive.

But the climate was shifting. By 20,000 years ago, the LGM arrived in full force. Even the hardy Baradostians could no longer endure the mountain winters, and the culture faded away as they retreated to more hospitable refuges.

Gravettian - into the Big Freeze

The Gravettian overlaps the late Aurignacian, dating from circa 33,000 years ago, and surviving until 20,000 years before present. This included the coldest peak of the last Ice Age, the Last Glacial Maximum around 24,000 years ago until 18,000 years ago. These really were Ice Age Europeans. Travel as far north as Britain must have taken place during warmer intervals. Otherwise the Gravettian is found in a band across Western Eurasia, which stretches from Portugal and the Basque region, through France, Germany, Czech republic, as far east as Georgia and South Russia.

Gravettian yDNA haplogroups so far discovered are CT, I, IJK, BT, one C1a2 and one F.

The Late Gravettian developed into a culture in France and Iberia, that we call the Solutrean. Meanwhile in the south east of Europe, from the Italian peninsula across the the Western Steppe, it diverged into the Epigravettian culture, which overlaps for much of its range with the Mammoth Steppe.

We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe4, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. 
A previously unknown population replacement event that was archaeologically invisible, occurring during the peak of the Ice Age.  This DNA was then passed on via the Solutrean people to the following Magdalenian people.

These people buried their dead more frequently in graves than did the Aurignicians.  The grave of three male teenagers at Dolní Věstonice was particularly enigmatic. The person on the left, has a hand placed over the stomach of the middle character, where red ochre had been applied. The central person had a curved spine, diagnosed as caused by chondrodysplasia calcificans punctata (CCP).  The body on the right had been placed facing down. Red ochre had also been applied to the heads of all three.

For their last journey, the individuals have been richly equipped with headdresses made of the teeth of the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), wolf (Canis lupus), and unidentified large predators. In the mouth of DV15, a mammoth ivory disc was placed.

Prey appear less restrictive than for the earlier period which focused on reindeer. The Gravettians hunted deer, mammoth, hares, lions, bear, foxes. Rather than use split antlers as points, they used flint blades known as Gravettian points. There is evidence that the Gravettians had access to bows and to the spear thrower. Furthermore, they may have had the first domesticated animal, the dog.

Conclusion

The Gravettians entered Europe in the long, slow run up to the Last Glacial Maximum, and endured much of it. Although they inhabited a vast region of Western Eurasia, their culture remained constant, albeit with some divisions between west and east. The Pavlovian Culture developed in the east as mammoth-hunters.  The Gravettians often buried their dead with much ceremony, wearing seashell beads, ivory, and animal teeth. They were successful and adaptive Ice Age hunters, preying on deer, reindeer, mammoth, fox, hare, hyena, wolf, seal, and foraged for shellfish. They lived in circular, semi subterranean shelters, but were mobile. Skilled artists with cave paintings and carved ivory. They tipped projectiles with flint blade points, and may have used bows, boomerangs and atlatls. Nets were woven, and lamps of stone used. They may have developed an early relationship with dogs.

During the Last Glacial Maximum, although their artefact culture continued, there was a population replacement event by people closer related to their Aurignician predecessors.  These later Gravettians fostered the Solutrean Culture in France and Iberia, and the Epigravettian culture of the east and south east.

Seahenge Day - the HolmeTimber Circles, Norfolk

I made an awesome heritage day trip yesterday.  My first encounter with Seahenge (Holme Timber Circle I) occurred in 1998.  I was living at Thetford, and made daily visits to a local dig of a Pagan Saxon site there, by the NAU (Norfolk Archaeological Unit).  On my last visit, the young digger remarked that he was being relocated to a remarkable timber circle rescue dig on the North Norfolk coast.

It was an eroded timber circle, with an inverted tree stump at the centre.  It was dated through dendrochronology to be 4,060 years old (2049 BC) felled and erected during the Early Bronze Age.  There were concerns that the site could soon be lost to sea erosion.  An attempt was launched by the NAU in collaboration with the TV show Time Team, to remove the timbers from the beach for conservation.  There was significant protest by both local groups, and by neo-pagans, that felt that the timbers should be left on the beach.

The removal continued despite the protests.  It has been postulated that it may have been used as a small shrine, or perhaps as a burial chamber - with the corpse placed on top of the inverted tree stump "altar".

I next saw the timbers a few years later, under preservation process at the Flag Fen archaeological museum near to Peterborough:

The tanks at Flag Fen were under canvas, and you could literally touch the timbers in the water tanks.  Since preservation was completed, most of the timbers, and the tree stump "alter", have been on display in Norfolk, at the Kings Lynn Museum.  I've visited it several times over the years, but I had never been to the original site.  Until yesterday!

I parked the car back near to the White Horse pub in the village.  I wanted to take a short pilgrimage of a few miles to the spot that I had identified from grid references online.  It also follows where the Peddars Way joins the North Norfolk Coastal Path.  Two long distance trails that I completed with my dog years ago.

The path follows behind the sea dunes and a stretch of freshwater marsh - that is most likely, similar to the environment that the timber circles were built in.  Sea erosion over the past 4,000 years has been driving the sealine and dunes back.  The dunes must have gradually crossed over the timber circles as it slowly retreated, leaving the archaeology on the beach surrounded by the eroding features of ancient fresh water marshes.

I had pre-programmed my trusty handheld GPS unit to track down the find spots.

I can't tell you how much I loved retracing my old steps along this section of the North Norfolk Coastal Path.  It's beautiful:

When I started to near to the point, and to the archaeological site, I safely traversed a foot path down to the beach.  An awesome, beautiful day:

I followed the GPS to the find spot here.  During the dig, it was alongside a patch of ancient marsh mud.  It's all gone.  Just bleached sands now.  A few years after removing Seahenge (Holme I), a second timber circle (Holme II) and altar was spotted close by.  It was a larger circle, with planks rather than posts, and signs of a timber causeway near by.  Following the experience of the public opposition to removing Holme I, it was decided this time, to leave this other timber circle in-situ.  Today, it appears to be gone.  Eroded away by storms and tides.  Clearly, the archaeologists and conservators were perfectly correct to have removed the smaller circle for preservation.  The above photo looks across where the two circles were.  A metal rod presumably left to mark the spot of Holme I:

Population Genetics Discussion.

Only within the past few weeks, a major new study of ancient European DNA has suggested that the earlier Neolithic peoples of the British Isles were largely replaced (or even perhaps displaced) by a new people carrying an artifact assemblage that we call the Bell Beaker Culture, most likely arriving first in Southeast Britain, from what is now the area of the Netherlands.  They would arrived in the British Isles circa 4,200 years ago.  This is just previous to the Holme Timber Circles.  The conclusion would be that most likely, the timber circles on the North Norfolk Coast were the burial practices of this new Beaker population.  However... the story remains to be detailed, or even perhaps rewritten with future study.
